Daphne Covington

Born in Virginia, and raised in Atlanta, I have made my home in the city for nearly 35 years.  In the mid-70’s, while still a student at Atlanta’s North Fulton High School, I began selling my abstract needlepoint designs to an upscale retail outlet.  This was my earliest training in color and composition.  From there, I began creating orders for other clients throughout the years.

In 1985, I was introduced to ceramic art.  It was a good match; the very first piece I created was sold, almost immediately.  My next step was fabric design.  I sold a line of pillows to various clients, including, Lord & Taylor and the Atlanta Merchandise.  My repertoire of usable designs soon expanded to include rugs, lamps, furniture, vases and other accessories for the home.  Eventually, my artwork sold through other retail outlets and wholesale gift and furniture catalogs.

Since 2000, completely self-taught, I consider myself a mixed-media painter.  My preferred mediums are oils, acrylics, chalks, and pen and ink.  Most of my paintings are supported by large and mid-size canvases, wood and paper.  Right from the start, I build many complex layers that support my abstract and playful designs.  My favorite subjects are faces and shapes which represent buildings and flowers specific to their space within the painting.  My influences come from artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and Kandinsky.

In 2003 and 2004, I was voted best local artist by Atlanta’s Southern Voice Magazine. My unstructured approach expresses my unique energy and has allowed me to be shown in magazines: Trends Magazine, Southern Voice Magazine and Atlanta Homes & Life Style Magazine.
